A Breastfeeding Competency Course

Target Audience:
State and local agency personnel working in the WIC Program.
Course Length: Twelve web based modules
Course Description:
This curriculum was developed to ensure that all staff attain a level of proficiency in the skills required to promote and support breastfeeding in the WIC setting.
Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this curriculum, participants will be able to:
- Recognize their role and responsibilities as part of the WIC "team" that promotes, protects, and supports breastfeeding
- Identify their personal beliefs and attitudes about breastfeeding
- Identify rapport building techniques that establish a positive relationship with pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
- Identify common myths and misperceptions about breastfeeding
- Identify factors that impact milk production and the breastfeeding relationship
- Describe breastfeeding anticipatory guidance for pregnant women, especially during the third trimester.
- Identify appropriate breastfeeding message for mothers and infants during the early postpartum period.
- Name common issues that arise when breastfeeding an older infant.
- Explain how a mother can maintain milk production when she is separated from her baby.
- Identify consequences of unresolved breastfeeding issues and strategies mothers can use to address them.
A Certificate of Completion is available as part of the last module.
